SCOTT Project for primary Teacher Training

Background Strengthening Capacity of Teacher Training (SCOTT) Project is funded by the EC and implemented in 4 regions of Puntland by Save the Children UK (SCUK). The project's purpose is to develop a comprehensive primary teacher training program. The teacher training will be in 2 modalities. One will be for currently serving, but unqualified, teachers to enable them to become qualified without leaving their teaching positions. For urban teachers in the six major cities in Puntland; Galkayo, Lasanod and Garowe will be under GTEC training, while Bosaso, baran and Qardho are under Faculty of education training. Evening classes will be offered throughout the school year. The program is dor 3 years, began in September 2006. Rural teachers were given self-study modules so that they can do independent work with regular visits from a mentor. The rural teachers will attended a residential 2-month training during the last summer of 2006a and will be back in this summer 2007. The duration of the self-study will vary from teacher to teacher. No matter the modality, each teacher will sit for the credential exam at the end of her/his program to receive certification. The implementation of the in-service teacher training program will require sites in all three centers. In the evenings, during the school year for urban teachers and during the long school holidays for rural teachers Faculty of education campuses is the most likely sites for these SCOTT activities. Teacher who finish this program will achieve diploma for primary teachers. There are some possibilities that some them achieves certicificate for primary teacher
Pre-Service Diploma program
Puntland State of Somalia has been sending 16 diploma teacher trainees to Amoud University in neighbouring Republic of Somaliland from the year 2003. The two - year secondary teacher training diploma course has been funded by DANIDA and European Commission (EC). To date, Danida has funded two cohorts from 2003 to 2005 and 2005 to 2007 while EC has funded one cohort from 2004 to 2006. The two-year secondary teacher training diploma course is aims to alleviate the current teacher shortage in Puntland and Somaliland . Under this arrangement, Puntland State of Somalia is allocated 16 slots while Somaliland gets 44 slots in the teacher training programme. At the start of the diploma teacher training course in 2003, Puntland had only 5 government aided schools. These were Bosaso, Gardo, Gambol, Las Anood and Omar Samantar in Galkayo. These schools were largely supported by the Institutional Support to Secondary Education in Somalia (ISSES) project from 1999-2004, funded by European Commission and managed by Centre for British Teachers (CfBT). The schools have also been supported under the Integrated Programme for Support of Schools (IPSOS) project funded by EC and managed by UNESCO from 2004-2006. Under the UNESCO PEER IPSOS project, 9 English media schools were supported. During the year 2006, three private English media schools were started in Puntland. There are 12 Arabic media secondary schools. Although these schools are referred to as Arabic media schools, some of them offer Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in English. Thus five subjects, including English language, are offered in English. Arguably, the Arabic schools are consumers of the English media teachers. Computer Lab Faculty of education has started its first intake of student in 2005 and expected to graduate in late 2008 by providing exciting and rewarding place to study. It is the Faculty’s pleasure to welcome students as well as qualified staff from across Somalia and rest of the world. Our academics are major national and international figures, in a wide variety of subject areas. The Faculty is proud to offer a wide range of courses from initial teacher training to the use of ICT in education.
